The mission of the

Greater Atlanta Adventist Academy Sports Program (GAAASP)

is to provide a
Christ-centered environment in which students can  experience positive results using athletic talent for
God's glory through the avenue of sports, as well as, developing the body, mind, and soul.

Team Basketball

Coaches may have additional guidelines that apply to their specific sport.

 

Team members…

are expected to follow school policies and other classroom guidelines.


are expected to attend all practices and team activities on-time. 


will abide by all guidelines given by coaches concerning dress and conduct while attending team activities.


may be suspended if on General Academic Probation or Citizenship Probation.


will not be eligible/lose team status* by receiving an "F" in a class for any scheduled grade update or put on Critical Academic Probation.


must make a vow of total abstinence concerning illegal substances, including alcohol, drugs, or drug paraphernalia.


who are confronted concerning attitude issues or insubordination may be asked to meet with the GAAASP Committee.


must pay for uniform rental and team fees as outlined by the Athletic Director.

*Team eligibility/status - Each school year before a specific sports season begins, a student receiving an "F" in a class for any scheduled grade update or put on Critical Academic Probation is not eligible to try-out.  Previous year grades have no effect on elligibility.  A student that secures membership on a team will be dismissed from the team if he/she receives an "F" or is put on Critical Academic Probation during the season.    Team fees will not be reimbursed.

A team can only achieve its full potential when the collective whole becomes greater than the sum of its individual parts. The participants in the GAAASP are expected to consider the team's needs and the team's goals ahead of individual needs and goals.

An atmosphere of true sportsmanship will be exhibited for all practices and team activities. Team members will be expected to treat others as they would like to be treated. Unacceptable behavior is, but not limited to:

  • Taunting
  • Responding to any unsportsmanlike behavior
  • Distracting others
  • Derogatory comments
  • Swearing

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

The coaches are expected to run practices efficiently for maximum development. With that goal in mind, team members will:

  • Hustle immediately to the coach when called
  • Give eye contact to the coach during instruction
  • Exhibit "relentless energy" during practice
  • Assist in collecting equipment used in practice

It is not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into the practice.

Success is often defined in: Did I win? This is the wrong question. The real question is: Did I make my best effort? That's what really matters. The rest of it just gets in the way. Everyone has the will to win. The real issue is: Who has the will to prepare to win? Winning games and great performances will be a welcome byproduct of doing many other things right.

Success: Being prepared to give your maximum effort and accepting and learning from your mistakes.

Playing-time is not a right or a guarantee. The coaches' objectives are to field a team that can work together and get them working together as a unit.  As a member of this team, each member was chosen because it was the coaches’ opinion that they would be able to contribute to the program's success. It is not acceptable to:

  • Make comments about lack of playing-time
  • Ask about playing-time during competition
  • Show disgust or lack of team support

Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned about who gets credit.

All practices, games, and performances are mandatory. Team members not able to participate for any reason need to give notice to a coach as soon as possible.

I have read the guidelines for participation in the GAAASP and I agree to abide by these guidelines for the upcoming sports season. I understand that I will be required to pay a team member fee to help defray team costs.
