    GAAA defeats Georgia Elite at Holiday Tournament!

    The 2012 Martin Luther King Holiday Tournament lived up to its bill as one of the premier holiday basketball tournament in the country as Greater Atlanta Adventist Academy defeated Georgia Elite Academy 52-51 in an overtime thriller. Down 51-50 with 8.4 seconds remaining, DeMont Davis Jr. drove the left side of the court, pumped faked, crossed over and nailed a floater in the lane putting the Knights up 52-51 with 1.4 seconds remaining. After a timeout by GA Elite, the lob attempt failed to 7 footer John Egbunu as Davis tipped the ball and grabbed it to secure an electrifying victory. GAAA head coach Curtis Smith called it a “total team effort” and praised his post and 3-point defense.

    GAAA was led by team defense as Cayman Howard, 15 rebounds, Jordan Pressley, 7 rebounds and Javonte White, 10 rebounds fought relentlessly in the paint to contain GA Elite’s big Junior 7 foot center, John Egbunu to 14 points and 10 rebounds. GAAA was led by Dion Hogan with 14 points and 4 rebounds and DeShawn Shannon with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jordan Pressley chipped in 8 points and had 14 rebounds and DeMont Davis Jr had 8 points, 4 rebounds 13 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Georgia Elite was led by Emiel Blackmon with 18 points and. Dion Hogan was named MVP of the 2012 Martin Luther King Holiday Tournament.

    Real education reform, take a cue from Adventists

    Amid all the buzz on education reform, the Seventh Day Adventist school system might seem an unexpected place to look for models in improving student achievement. But by educating mind, body, and spirit, Adventist schools outperform the national average across all demographics.

    Riverside, Calif. Education reform has taken center stage lately as Americans struggle to close the oft-condemned achievement gap. But quietly in our midst, the second largest Christian school system in the world has been steadily outperforming the national average – across all demographics.

    The Seventh-Day Adventists' holistic curriculum serves as a model for how to overcome that gap – the disparity in academic performance between low-income and minority students and their peers in higher-income communities. But even more, it shows how to narrow the gap between mind, body, and spirit, truly educating students for success.

    Now, I'm not advocating for religious instruction to be included in school curricula. Rather, what my research indicates is that holistic learning – an education that doesn't erect artificial barriers among disciplines and between mind, body, and spirit – does indeed result in greater student achievement.
